Club career

IFK Velen

Marcus Berg started his football career in the local club IFK Velen in Torsby. Second team was Torsby IF and at the age of 17 joined Marcus the team IFK Gothenburg and he made his debut in 2005. Marcus’ first goal in the Swedish Premier League was in the away game against Helsingborgs IF.

Marcus had his breakthrough in 2007, when he made 14 goals in 17 Swedish Premier League matches. His effort had a great influence on the success of IFK Gothenburg when they became Swedish champions in 2007.

In August 2007 Marcus was sold to FC Groningen for 3.8 million Euro, making Berg the most expensive player in IFK Gothenburg’s history.

Berg's last match in the blue and white jersey was against Kalmar FF when IFK Gothenburg won 5-0. He became the goal scorer of the match with a nice chip over Kalmar's goalkeeper.

FC Groningen

Berg had instant success at the club FC Groningen after scoring his first two goals in his second match in the away game against AJAX. Overall Marcus scored 23 in his first two seasons at FC Groningen.

On 20 December 2008, Marcus scored four goals against Roda JC when FC Groningen won 5-2. Up until then Marcus had scored 14 goals in 17 matches.

Hamburger SV

Marcus Berg signed for five years with the Bundesliga club Hamburger SV in July 2009. Marcus new club ended on fith place in the 2008-9 Bundesliga season making the club eligable for the qualifying rounds in the UEFA Europa League.

International career

Marcus Berg made his national team debut on 6 February 2008 in a freindly match against Turkey before the European Championships 2008.

In the spring of 2009 Marcus was selected for the Swedish national team in the World Cup qualifier matches against Denmark and Malta. In the match against Malta Marcus was substituted in the 58th minute and scored his first national team goal after a nice pass from Zlatan Ibrahimović.

Under-21 European Championships in Sweden Marcus was instrumental in the advancement of Sweden to the semifinal. Marcus scored a hattrick in the first group stage match against Belarus where Sweden won 5-1. Later in the group stage Marcus scored two goals against Serbia when Sweden won 3-1. When Sweden faced England in the semifinal Marcus scored two goals making the score 3-3 after full time. The match when to penalty shootout which England won. Marcus made seven goals in total in the Under-21 Euro and winning the Golden Boot after beating Andrea Pirlo’s old championship record of four goals.
